Meet Mrs. Nicklay

Hi there! I'm glad you stopped by for a visit. I hope this information will help you get to know me better:

*I'm married to Bruce and we have three great kids who have all attended WACS. Jacob holds dual masters' degrees in architecture and sustainable design from the University of Minnesota. He is married to Sarah (a registered dietician and Lourdes grad working at St. Mary's University) and works as an architectural designer at Warneke and Associates here in Winona.  They are parents to our twin grandsons, Luke and Eli, who are 3 years old and Peter who joined the family in May and is 5 months old.  They are the joys of our lives.  Ben holds a degree in environmental studies from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He works for the DNR as a watershed specialist and lives in Duluth.  Laura graduated from the College of St. Benedict in 2013.  After a year as a volunteer teacher at Christ the King School in Detroit, MI, and a year at St. Mary's Catholic School in Caledonia, MN, she is now teaching 2nd grade at St. Francis School which is part of the Catholic school system in Rochester.

We keep busy attending theater performances, enjoying play dates with our grandsons, and being involved in the Winona community.

*I taught for 10 years at St. Francis School in Rochester, MN (grades 3 and 4) before moving back to Winona where I had originally gone to college and earned a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education with an area of concentration in Bilingual Ed. and a minor in Spanish at the College of St. Teresa. Several years ago I earned my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth.

*The WACS system has been my teaching home for the past 20+ years. I've taught at St. Mary's (Educare and Preschool), Cathedral (2nd and 3rd grades), and at St. Stan's (Reading Resource and Library for grades my student teaching way back when!)

*Reading is my favorite leisure time activity and I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. It is a great blessing to be able to share my love of reading with the students and to see their interest, skills, confidence, and excitement about reading and books grow.

*I serve as the librarian for grades 1-6 at St. Stan's for half of my day. I am in charge of ordering new books to support our curriculum and inspire students to read for pleasure.  I also take care of the processing of those books and our magazines. I prepare and share weekly lessons with the students addressing library skills and information on books, literary awards, authors, illustrators and genres in literature.

*For the other half of my day I don my teacher's hat once more and meet with small groups of students to support them in reading. We work on fluency, accuracy, and strategies for both comprehension and decoding. I firmly believe that everyone can learn, we just don't all learn at the same pace or in the same way. I am my students' greatest cheerleader!

*I also enjoy camping, exploring God's creation, listening to good music, cooking, attending theater productions, gardening, knitting or crocheting prayer shawls, embroidering, visiting Lake Superior, and did I mention reading? My favorite new activity is visiting my little grandsons and playing with them.  They are such a joy!!  St. Mary's is our parish home, and we are involved in a variety of ministries and activities.

Hey! Have you read any good books lately?
Stop in at St. Stan's and look me up at the Library (Rm. 211) or the Reading Resource room (Rm. 212) so you can tell me about them! I'm always looking for good books to read and share with others!!  Visit our St. Stan's library site from any computer.  Just click here
