Meet Mrs. Schauer

Hello! I'm very happy to be starting my 12th year of teaching 6th grade at WACS, and my 33rd year of my teaching career. I can't believe it has been that long! Of those 33 years, I've taught 4th grade once, a 5/6 combination class for 3 years and 29 years of 6th grade. I must like this age a whole lot. I grew up in Gilbert, MN, a town on the Iron Range in northern MN. My mom was a homemaker until I was about 11 years old, when she went back to work part time. My dad worked in the iron mines as a mechanic until he retired. I have 2 siblings- one brother and one sister, who are both younger than I am. After graduating from Gilbert High School in 1974, I attended UMD majoring in elementary education and minoring in English. In 1978, I was hired to teach 6th grade in the Aitkin Public Schools where I taught for almost 7 years. During that time I met my future husband, got married, and moved to Alexandria, MN in 1985. The following year, I was hired to teach 6th grade at St. Mary's School in Alexandria where we lived until 1991 when my husband took a job transfer to the Twin Cities area. Again I had to find a new job, and in 1992 began teaching a 5/6 combination class at St. Martin School in Rogers, Mn. In 1993, I also began working on my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of St. Thomas, graduating in 1996. In 1999, my husband's job moved us here to Winona, and after a year of subbing, began teaching 6th grade at St. Stan's. My husband promised me we wouldn't have to move again so I hope to retire here. My husband, Dale, and I have one daughter, Kelsey, who attended college at UW-Stout. After completing her internship this year in Chicago, she will be able to take her State Boards and get a job as a Registered Dietician. It is certainly a lot quieter and cleaner at our home, but we miss her a lot. I enjoy reading, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, knitting, golf, theater, traveling and attending sporting events, especially the Twins games. In past years, I also played softball and volleyball. We belong to St. Mary's Parish where I am on the Parish Council. I look forward to getting to know all of you better. I know this will be a terrific year. Linda Schauer
