Hello, my name is Julie Olstad, and I teach classroom and Liturgical Music to 1st through 6th graders at St. Stan's. I am originally from the south side of Chicago (GO WHITE SOX!) where I attended Catholic grammar school and high school. St. Mary's University brought me to Winona where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education in 1976. I taught Jr. and Sr. High Choir for 13 years in public schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I took a few years off from teaching to stay home with my children, and eventually came to the WACS system in 1993, making this my 23nd year here. In the spring of 2003 I earned a Master's Degree in Education, with an emphasis in multicultural music in the elementary music classroom, from St. Mary's University.

My husband Gene is semi-retired after teaching band for 38 yrs. He can't quite seem to completely cut the ties, as he keeps accepting long term sub jobs in Winona and surrounding areas. We have 3 children - Megan graduated from St. Mary's University in 2011 with a degree in Electronic Publishing. Jeanne works for the Northwestern University in Chicago,, and is a member of their Cytogenetics Team. Timothy is pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a professional musician,  We have one grandchild, Lily Marcella, who is a 4th grader at St. Stan's, and is the light of our lives!

I feel very fortunate to be teaching in the WACS system. It's uplifting to work in an environment that is positive, nurturing, progressive, and supportive. The faculty and staff share a special comaraderie in that we're able to celebrate successes together and hold each other up when the going gets tough.

I love teaching children about the wonders of music. They are so enthusiastic and eager to learn. I'm excited about a year filled with discovery and exploration through melody, rhythm, harmony, dance, drumming, and lots of other exciting musical adventures. Please feel free to drop in anytime to Rm. 108 to see what we're doing. I look forward to working with your children again this year. I can be contacted by email at or by phone St. Stan's 452-3766 ext. 1108. Be sure to check for pictures in the Photo Gallery.
